BALADI & SAIDI LAYERS WITHIN
CLASSICAL EGYPTIAN DANCE

This is the ultimate classical dance workshop especially
designed by
Serena Ramzy to her most loved composition by
Hossam
Ramzy & Ossam El Hendy… “Ruby”!

This composition swings wildly from one angle to another.
From the most intimately feminine Baladi to the most sophisticated
classical arrangements descending to the “earthiest” sounds of
Saidi. All in a dynamic combination that is enriching and enhancing
in this art form of classical performing as an Egyptian style dancer.

Rhythms that will flow from one to the other, elements of the Baladi

sequence melting into classical arabesques, going through the
Saidi pulse and heartbeat then taking you through an emotionally
     classical port.

In this workshop we will be experimenting with splitting the class
into various sections that will interpret a different part of the composition while the others are dancing the main layer of the
music.

A workshop that will be filled with fun, energy and lots of new
aspects of the dance….

Bringing the old Egyptian Hollywood back to the present time.

A must for all.

A NEW LIVE BALADI Dance Workshop

with the Hossam Ramzy Baladi Ensemble

   Featuring EL GAMAL on Keyboards

Hossam Ramzy

EL Gamal

Emile Bassili
Mostafa Orabi

Mark Carlyon

Baladi, lives in the heart of the Egyptian people. It is the soul of Cairo, the centre of emotion and devotion of every Egyptian woman. In Egypt, dance is called Baladi. As it is from our country and is the natural product of our artistry and creativity. It is the Urbanized Folklore that brings all the innocence of the country folk and laces it with the lure of the ghetto.

Baladi is improvised live.
This is why I bring you the best musicians from Egypt. A superb violinist Emile Bassili  together with a magical accordionist, Mostafa Orabi who are masters of the art of Baladi and our guest star on Keyboards EL GAMAL, Egypt's top Baladi artist..
Live drumming by Hossam Ramzy & Mark Carlyon.

The first part of the workshop will concentrate on how to improvise to a live sound as opposed to a pre-recorded  improvisation. This takes skill which can only be achieved by the knowledge of how to translate the music.

You will learn the Basic Parts of Baladi, how they interact together. You will learn how to dance Musical Layers over the rhythm. Various Rhythmic Combinations are used in Baladi. Come and learn how  to recognise the right parts of the music, how to pull back the energy and when to let it all come out in a flourish of emotional & and artistic explosion.

You will also learn the Expanded Style of Baladi and how do you deal with Shaaby songs that may follow the basic Baladi progression.

Questions such as:
- When do I concentrate on the rhythm or the music
?
- In What part of the improvisation do I put all my energy?
- What is the character of the Baladi Dancer? And
- How do I realise what is coming next in the improvisation?

Will all be answered in this workshop

A unique opportunity to experience this magical art of pure Egyptian music & dance with LIVE Music by some of Egypt’s most talented artists.

A Dancer of Egypt is not accepted by the people until she can dance a good Baladi… The Dance of Egypt.

--------------------------------------------------------

HOSSAM & SERENA have travelled the world with their unique and effective style of workshops. Whilst the themes may vary, their overriding mission remains constant, to help oriental dancers learn to intuitively interpret, and become part of, the music. This crucial skill is the key factor on which Arab audiences judge a dancer’s ability, but is so often missing in performance and even more seldom is it taught.

Hossam & Serena present a unique opportunity to learn this skill, not just from the perspective of a talented dancer, but from the perspective of a world-renowned percussionist, musician, composer and international dance instructor. This style of workshop stands alone, and the Ramzys employ a variety of teaching methods during a single workshop, including lectures, discussions and demonstrations of movement and rhythm, so that learning is achieved at a deeper level than mere repetition of a dance routine.

Whilst there is a substantial and significant element of dance techniques covered during the workshop, learning “new moves” is not the key focus. A choreography may be used but not with the aim of basic repetition of steps, but as a tool to understand how the music can be interpreted individually.

Workshops are fast-paced and challenging but even complete beginners surprise themselves with what they find themselves capable of achieving.
